Slam is a drama following Raymond Joshua, a young performance poet arrested on a marijuana charge in a Washington, D.C. jail. Inside prison walls, Raymond discovers his voice and strength through creative expression, guided by a writing teacher named Lauren Bell and challenged by a prison gang leader. As Raymond grapples with the dangers of incarceration and systemic injustice, he learns to harness poetry as a tool for survival and self-liberation. The film explores how art and language can empower those caught in the criminal justice system, offering Raymond a path beyond the cycles that trap so many Black men. Slam captures the raw intensity of prison life while celebrating the transformative potential of creative resistance.
