Eagle of the Night is a 1928 aviation action serial from Pathé, released during the final year of silent film dominance. An inventor has created a revolutionary silencer for aircraft engines, and criminals scheme to steal the invention for nefarious purposes. Josef Swickard plays the inventor in a role that foreshadows his later work in The Lost City. Though several chapters are lost—including all of chapters 7, 8, and 9—the surviving footage preserves the beginning, end, and enough of the narrative to follow the action. The restored Grapevine print, beautifully tinted in sections, shows signs of age in places, but captures the spirit of this final-era silent serial with its blend of technical intrigue and pulp adventure.
