Tales from the Gimli Hospital is a Canadian experimental film that weaves together two timelines in the small Icelandic-Canadian town of Gimli, Manitoba. While their mother lies dying in a modern hospital, two children listen as their grandmother recounts a haunting medieval tale of Einar, a solitary man, his companion Gunnar, and the ethereal Snjofrieder. The film moves between the children's present-day vigil and the grandmother's story of longing and connection set in Gimli's distant past. Director Guy Maddin crafts a dreamlike meditation on mortality, community, and the power of storytelling to bridge generations. Shot in stark black and white, the film captures both the bleakness of loss and the strange beauty found in old legends passed down through families.
