Gestes du repas(1958)
Gestes du repas is an ethnographic film that examines Belgian culture through the lens of everyday eating habits. Directed by Luc de Heusch, the film documents the repetitive gestures and rituals surrounding food—from market shopping to family dinners—across all social classes. Though eating occupies roughly one-eighth of our daily lives, these seemingly mundane actions reveal profound truths about a civilization's values and customs. De Heusch approaches his contemporaries with the same anthropological distance typically reserved for distant cultures, treating ordinary Belgian meals and feasts as windows into national character. Originally conceived as a neutral, detached exercise in cinematic ethnography, the film ultimately becomes a fascinating portrait of how a people define themselves through food.
