The Great Mike is a family film about a boy, his best friend, and their trusty horse. Speck and Jimmy run a paper route using Mike to pull their delivery wagon through town. When a new horse track opens nearby, it brings Colonel Whitney, a wealthy horse breeder and racer, to the area. After the Colonel becomes a newspaper customer, Jimmy convinces both him and Speck to enter Mike in races against the Colonel's purebred thoroughbreds. What follows is a charming, comedic underdog story as the unlikely horse competes on the professional track, proving that heart and determination matter more than pedigree.
