Black Butterflies(2011)

Black Butterflies is a film about South African poet Ingrid Jonker, whose life unfolds against the backdrop of Apartheid and under the shadow of her father, the country's Minister of Censorship. Searching for both love and belonging, Jonker finds passion with literary figures Jack Cope and André Brink, yet remains unable to find a true home. Her powerful verse eventually reaches Nelson Mandela, who quotes her poem "The Dead Child of Nyanga" in his first parliamentary address, recognizing her as one of South Africa's finest poets. The film traces a talented artist's struggle for freedom and acceptance in a repressive era.
