Candidats pour du beur? is a documentary that traces the history of equality struggles in France through the eyes of children and grandchildren of immigrant workers. Since the 2007 presidential election, these candidates have been nominated to represent "diversity" in various campaigns. The film follows their journeys across working-class neighborhoods—from Clichy-sous-Bois to Marseille and Roubaix—capturing meetings, debates, and conversations with activists and political figures including Mouloud Aounit, Kamel Hamza, Rama Yade, and Samia Ghali. A complex portrait emerges of ambitious individuals united by a single determination: to be recognized as serious political candidates, not merely tokens of diversity. The documentary asks whether these "new faces" of the Republic will achieve genuine representation or remain symbolic gestures when votes are counted.
