Conscience
Conscience(1912)
Conscience is a silent film that doubles as a cautionary moral tale, set largely within a chamber of horrors. Eleanor Donelly elopes with her lover Eric to New York against her police officer brother's wishes. After Eric abandons her, Eleanor—desperate and hungry—attempts to steal milk for her baby and flees into the chamber of horrors to escape a pursuing policeman. By chance, Eric, now fallen in with disreputable company, accepts a wager to spend the night in the same macabre venue. When morning comes and Eric glimpses Eleanor stirring in the shadows, the shock proves fatal. Eleanor, witnessing his death, descends into madness. The film uses the chamber of horrors as both setting and symbol, exploring themes of desperation, consequence, and the fragility of the human mind.
