Silmido is a South Korean war film based on true events. After North Korean commandos fail to assassinate President Park Chung-hee in 1968, the South Korean military retaliates by recruiting 31 criminals to a remote island. There, they train for a suicide mission to kill Kim Il-sung, promised redemption and honor in exchange for their lives. When the operation is abruptly cancelled, the men are left abandoned and betrayed, their rage building toward a breaking point. The film draws inspiration from an actual military uprising that erupted in the 1970s, exploring themes of sacrifice, injustice, and the human cost of Cold War tensions. Silmido balances intense action sequences with the psychological toll of impossible choices, delivering a gripping portrait of soldiers caught between duty and survival.
