Die Deutschen is a German documentary series that examines pivotal moments in the nation's history through dramatic reconstruction and animation. The first season, which aired on ZDF in 2008, spans from Otto the Great's reign through the collapse of the German Empire after World War I. A second season followed in 2010, tracing the arc from Charlemagne to Gustav Stresemann's leadership during the Weimar Republic. Each episode blends live-action scenes with computer-generated imagery to bring historical events to life, filmed across more than 200 locations in Germany, Malta, and Romania. The ambitious production invested roughly €500,000 per episode, creating an immersive journey through centuries of German political and cultural transformation.
