Star Maidens is a British-German science-fiction series that flips gender dynamics on its head. The planet Medusa, ruled by women and home to an advanced humanoid civilization, is knocked out of orbit by a rogue comet and sent drifting through space. As the planet's surface becomes uninhabitable, its inhabitants retreat into vast underground cities to survive. Created by Eric Paice and produced by Portman Productions, Scottish Television, and Werbung im Rundfunk, the series explores themes of power, society, and role reversal against a backdrop of cosmic exile. Filmed at Bray Studios and locations across Berkshire and Buckinghamshire, Star Maidens ran for 13 episodes on ITV from September to December 1976, capturing the imaginative science-fiction storytelling of the era.
