The Journal(1982)
The Journal was a Canadian current affairs series that aired on CBC Television from 1982 to 1992, immediately following The National at 10:22 PM. The program expanded on daily news stories through in-depth interviews, documentaries, and town hall meetings, reflecting the broadcaster's evolving approach to public affairs journalism. Barbara Frum and Mary Lou Finlay co-hosted the first season before Frum became sole host for the remainder of the show's run until her death in 1992. Producer Mark Starowicz pioneered interview techniques including the "double-ender" setup and later adopted satellite technology to conduct remote conversations. Guest hosts such as Bill Cameron, Peter Kent, Keith Morrison, and Brian Stewart occasionally filled in during Frum's absences. The Journal represented a significant moment in Canadian television news, bridging the gap between hard news reporting and deeper investigative storytelling.
