Victorian Pharmacy is a four-part historical documentary series that aired on BBC Two in 2010. Set at Blists Hill Victorian Town in Shropshire, the show explores how 19th-century people treated everyday illnesses using remedies that often contained ingredients now banned or proven dangerous. Presenter Nick Barber, a pharmacist, recreates these historical treatments using modern pharmaceutical knowledge to produce safer alternatives. Alongside him, PhD student Tom Quick and domestic historian Ruth Goodman investigate the reality of Victorian medicine and domestic life. The series reveals the ingenuity and risks of period healthcare, offering a fascinating glimpse into how ordinary people managed their health without modern medicine. Goodman's expertise in historical living, honed through earlier projects like Victorian Farm, brings authenticity to the reconstruction of 19th-century pharmaceutical practices.
