Today is the pioneering American morning television show that debuted on NBC on January 14, 1952, making it the first program of its kind in the world. Originally airing two hours on weekdays, the show expanded to Sundays in 1987 and Saturdays in 1992, then stretched to three hours in 2000 and four hours in 2007. Today dominated American television for decades, holding the Nielsen ratings lead for 852 consecutive weeks starting in December 1995 until April 2012. Though briefly overtaken by ABC's Good Morning America in the late 1980s, Today remains one of the longest-running American television series and was ranked #17 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest Television Shows of All Time in 2002.
