God's Step Children(1938)

God's Step Children is a 1938 drama that explores colorism and identity through the story of Naomi, a light-skinned Black child abandoned by her mother and raised by the virtuous Mrs. Saunders. As Naomi grows, her fixation with whiteness alienates her from her own community, leading Mrs. Saunders to send her to a convent. Torn between her unrequited love for her adoptive brother Jimmie and societal pressures, Naomi agrees to marry his friend but finds herself repulsed by his darker skin and working-class manner. The film examines the destructive consequences of internalized racism and the psychological toll of rejecting one's heritage in pursuit of an impossible ideal.
