This Is the Life is a comedy following Billy Drake, a movie-obsessed young man sent by his father to manage the family's South American ammunition business. Before departure, Billy spots a beautiful woman outside a theater and becomes convinced she's a film star. When both she and an eccentric political agitator named Count Von Nuttenburg board his ship, confusion erupts. The Count, having stolen what he believes is a machine gun, actually carries a movie camera. Billy mistakes the Count for a film director and the vessel for a movie set. When the ship reaches a port engulfed in revolution, Billy's delusion deepens—he assumes the gunfire and soldiers are part of an elaborate production. Only when rebels capture him and his mysterious shipmate, threatening execution, does reality crash through. Billy escapes through quick thinking, enlists Federal troops to defeat the Count, and wins the heart of the woman who captivated him from the start.
