Hymn of the Nations is a 1944 short film commissioned by the U.S. Office of War Information. Conductor Arturo Toscanini leads the NBC Symphony Orchestra, tenor Jan Peerce, and the Westminster Choir in a performance of Verdi's Inno delle nazioni, a 19th-century composition originally written as a tribute to Europe. For this wartime production, Toscanini expanded the score to include The Star-Spangled Banner and The Internationale, honoring both the Allied cause and Italian partisans. Filmed in NBC's Studio 8H, the documentary weaves together the orchestral performance with intimate scenes of Toscanini at home, underscoring his fierce anti-fascist convictions and celebrating Italy's liberation. The Academy Film Archive restored the film in 2010.
