The Silly Age(2006)

The Silly Age is a Cuban film set in 1958 Havana, during the final year of the Revolution. Ten-year-old Samuel arrives in the city with his recently divorced mother, and they move into the home of his eccentric grandmother Violeta. There, Samuel discovers a mysterious new world where the roles between parent and child blur—his mother behaves with childlike innocence while Samuel must navigate adult responsibilities far beyond his years. The film captures the "edad de la peseta," the pre-adolescent period between seven and eleven, as a time of confusion and unexpected maturity. Against the backdrop of Cuba's turbulent political upheaval, Samuel's coming-of-age becomes both intimate and historically resonant, exploring how family dysfunction and national crisis shape a young boy's passage into adulthood.
