Stop for Bud is Danish filmmaker Jørgen Leth's debut, a radical experimental work made in collaboration with Ole John. The film follows jazz pianist Bud Powell as he moves through Copenhagen—past King's Garden, along industrial waterfronts, and across waste dumps—accompanied only by his own music. Leth and John deliberately separate image from sound, rejecting conventional cinema to forge a new visual language. Saxophonist Dexter Gordon narrates, recounting stories of Powell's legendary left hand and the intensity of his playing. The film captures Powell's paradoxical nature: a musician of extraordinary technical brilliance who seemed oddly detached from the world around him, present at the keys yet mysteriously absent. Stop for Bud remains a landmark of avant-garde filmmaking, a portrait of artistic genius and inner isolation told through pure cinematic invention.
