Four Shadows(1978)

Four Shadows is an experimental film that explores perception through systematic juxtaposition. Four image sequences—surveyors measuring land through an old window, a family of Siamang Gibbons at the Washington Zoo, an industrial site, and a page from a Cézanne composition book filmed against bright leaves—are paired in all combinations with four sound sequences: a dramatic scene from Debussy's opera Pelléas et Mélisande, a passage from Wordsworth's The Prelude, sounds of night rowing on a lake, and ape vocalizations. Each pairing creates unexpected affinities between the visual and sonic elements, revealing how meaning emerges from the relationship between image and sound. The film's structure invites viewers to discover connections across nature, art, literature, and human observation, challenging conventional narrative and encouraging active interpretation of how we perceive the world around us.
