Carnival in Flanders is a 1935 Belgian comedy set in 1616 Flanders, where the small town of Boom prepares for its annual festivities. When news arrives that the Duke of Olivares, regent for King Philip III of Spain, will visit, the town's men panic and flee. The women, led by the burgomaster's bold wife, seize control and devise a cunning plan: they'll charm the Spanish delegation with hospitality and revelry so elaborate that the Duke will spare their town from occupation. What unfolds is a witty battle of wits between the resourceful townswomen and their would-be conquerors, mixing period comedy with clever political maneuvering.
