An American Ascent is a documentary following the first African American expedition to summit Denali, North America's highest peak at 20,327 feet. The film explores why many African Americans feel disconnected from outdoor recreation and wilderness spaces, examining what researchers call the "adventure gap." Nine Black climbers undertake the grueling multi-week ascent to challenge stereotypes about who belongs in America's wild places and to inspire greater diversity in outdoor pursuits. Their climb coincides with the centennial of Denali's first summit, making the expedition both a personal test of endurance and a statement about representation in adventure sports. The documentary captures the physical demands of high-altitude mountaineering while addressing deeper questions about access, belonging, and the cultural barriers that have historically kept communities of color away from America's most iconic natural spaces.
