I Am Somebody(1970)
I Am Somebody is a documentary that captures the 1969 Charleston hospital workers' strike, when 400 poorly paid Black women demanded union recognition and higher wages. Filmmaker Madeline Anderson participated in the strike herself, documenting the workers' courage as they faced off against the National Guard and state authorities. The film features support from civil rights leaders including Coretta Scott King, Ralph Abernathy, and Andrew Young of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Anderson's work reveals the strikers' resilience and the backing they received from Charleston's Black community. As arguably the first televised civil rights documentary directed by a woman of color, I Am Somebody stands as both a crucial historical record of labor and civil rights activism and a landmark in American cinema.
