Marta of the Lowlands(1914)

Marta of the Lowlands is a drama exploring exploitation, love, and redemption in rural Spain. Sebastien, a landowner, has sheltered the orphan Marta for years in exchange for sexual favors. When his wealth declines, he marries a rich man's daughter and arranges for Marta to wed the shepherd Manelich, falsely claiming the shepherd knows of their past. Marta discovers her new husband is ignorant of the affair and, more troubling, genuinely loves her. Torn between her dark history and newfound affection, she confesses everything to Manelich. The revelation ignites tragedy: Manelich kills Sebastien in rage. The shepherd and Marta then flee together to the hills, seeking a fresh start away from the lowlands that shaped their suffering.
