His Matrimony(1985)

His Matrimony is a Taiwanese drama set in the 1950s and 60s, following Mei-Hsia from a prominent family and Yun-Lang, who works for the local peasant association. Though they care for each other deeply, Mei-Hsia fears her mother's disapproval and they keep their relationship secret. When Yun-Lang arranges a formal proposal through a matchmaker, Mei-Hsia's parents reject it outright and send her away to relatives near Keelung to separate them. Yun-Lang pursues her there, and their romance becomes public knowledge. Desperate to unite, Mei-Hsia's family reverses course and proposes the match—only for Yun-Lang's family to refuse. As their elopement plans crumble under family pressure, tragedy strikes. Mei-Hsia takes her own life, leaving Yun-Lang to marry only her memorial tablet, a haunting meditation on love, duty, and the rigid social constraints of postwar Taiwan.
