Thank God I'm in the Film Business! is a documentary portrait of Eva Ebner, an eccentric Berlin-based figure who has spent decades immersed in German cinema. Working as both assistant director and actor, Ebner became integral to the legendary 1960s Edgar Wallace crime adaptations and has mentored generations of young filmmakers with infectious passion for the medium. Now in her eighties, Ebner carries deep trauma from her childhood in Gdansk, marked by an anti-Semitic stepmother and the horrors of Nazi occupation. Director Lothar Lambert's unflinching film doesn't shy away from the era's dark legacy or the tensions that emerge between filmmaker and subject, creating a complex portrait of artistic dedication shadowed by historical wounds.
