Solitary Land(2017)

Solitary Land is a documentary that explores the paradox of incarceration on Easter Island, one of the world's most remote inhabited places. Located 3,680 kilometres from Chile in the Pacific Ocean, Rapa Nui has been home to Polynesian communities for centuries, later colonised by Europeans and immortalised by its iconic moai statues. Today the island maintains a stable population with its own administration and justice system. Yet this isolated territory, from which escape is nearly impossible, houses a prison—a structure without walls that embodies a strange contradiction. The film examines how punishment and confinement function in a place where geography itself already confines its inhabitants, raising questions about justice, community, and the nature of isolation itself.
