Tortured Dust(1984)

Tortured Dust is an experimental film that captures a family in transition. Shot as Stan Brakhage's teenage sons prepared to leave home and edited during his separation from his first wife Jane, the film documents the final chapter of their shared life in a cabin they'd inhabited for nearly two decades. The first half follows the boys moving through familiar spaces; the second shifts focus to Brakhage's three daughters. Part of his larger autobiographical project known as The Book of Family, Tortured Dust blends intimate domestic observation with the filmmaker's distinctive visual approach, creating a poignant record of adolescence, departure, and family dissolution.
