Jane Brakhage is a 1983 documentary film that explores the life and creativity of Jane Brakhage, wife of experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. Director Barbara Hammer became fascinated by Jane after meeting her at San Francisco State College, struck by her curious mind and engagement with the natural world. Jane collected seed pods, studied animal behavior, and possessed a complexity that Hammer felt Stan's own films had failed to capture. Rather than remain a supporting figure in her husband's artistic vision, Jane emerges here as a multifaceted creative force in her own right. Shot on 16mm in color, Hammer's intimate portrait challenges assumptions about artistic partnership and female creativity within the avant-garde film movement. The documentary reveals a woman whose intellectual curiosity and unconventional thinking shaped not only her own life but the experimental cinema landscape of the era.
