Quai Notre-Dame is a French film following Eloi, a listless twenty-year-old secondhand goods dealer who lives with his girlfriend Nénette, his sister Fortunée, and their grandmother—a colorful character known as the Queen of the Flea Market. When Eloi brings a Venetian mirror to Dormoy, a prestigious antique dealer in Paris's fashionable quarters, he encounters Dormoy's wealthy mistress and falls instantly in love. She responds with ambiguous encouragement, neither discouraging nor fully reciprocating his affection. As Eloi navigates this attraction, his immature nature and divided loyalties between Nénette and his sister create tension within his small, eccentric household. The film captures the romantic yearnings and social constraints of postwar Paris through the eyes of a young man caught between desire and circumstance.
