Masquerade is an Italian science fiction film about a man's fight to save an oppressed population from extinction. Cesare, a former head of a government department tasked with integrating mysterious beings called Returnees into society, abandons his post after rejecting the state's brutal treatment of them. When Venice's Doge moves to exterminate all Returnees for political gain, Cesare takes action. His crusade is personal: his wife Amanda was transformed into a Returnee years ago, and he refuses to accept the official narrative that they are mindless creatures. Convinced they retain emotion and capacity for communication, Cesare races against time to stop the genocide. The film explores themes of human dignity, compassion, and resistance against authoritarian power.
