Goryokaku(1988)

Goryokaku is a historical film set during Japan's tumultuous transition from feudal rule to modernity. After the Tokugawa Shogunate falls, surviving Shinsengumi warriors follow Enomoto Takeaki to Ezo, Japan's northernmost island, where they establish a breakaway state recognized by European powers. The conflict culminates at Goryokaku, a star-shaped fortress that becomes the final battleground of the Japanese Civil Wars. As imperial forces advance with rifles and cannons, the samurai confront an unavoidable truth: their swords and traditional warfare cannot compete with modern weaponry and the unstoppable march of progress.
