Monkey on My Back is a hard-hitting biographical drama about welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross. Cameron Mitchell stars as Ross, whose promising ring career is derailed when he enlists in the Marines at the start of World War II. A decorated war hero, Ross contracts malaria overseas and receives morphine for pain relief. Upon returning home, he's battled by addiction. The film chronicles his brutal descent into drug dependency with unflinching detail—so raw that it nearly failed to receive the Production Code seal. Despite serving as technical advisor on the film, the real Barney Ross sued the producers for defamation and lost. The movie unflinches at the cost of addiction and redemption, grounding its portrait in the boxer's actual struggle.
