Thirty Second Spots: TV Commercials for Artists (1982-83)

0h 1mReleaseden

Thirty Second Spots is a 1982–83 experimental video series that flips the logic of television advertising on its head. Director Dara Birnbaum creates rapid-fire portraits of avant-garde artists, composers, and performers—each lasting exactly thirty seconds. John Cage, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Meredith Monk, and Spalding Gray appear in stark close-ups, performing or speaking directly to a fixed camera. Rather than selling products, these "commercials for artists" distill each subject's creative essence with wit and visual economy. The series captures the artistic core of its subjects through concise, dramatic presentation, treating experimental culture with the same slick brevity usually reserved for selling consumer goods.
