Backstage(2004)
“The torment and the delight of my heart.”
Backstage is a provocative film that follows director Giorgio Salieri as he stages an X-rated adaptation of Verdi's "La Traviata," using the production as both creative outlet and emotional exorcism for his obsession with star Sasha Byazrov. On set, tensions simmer between cast and crew as Giorgio struggles to focus on the work at hand, distracted by memories of his past with Sasha. As filming progresses through iconic scenes—including a recreation of Act I's famous toast—the boundaries between reality and fantasy blur. Giorgio's longing intensifies as he watches Sasha prepare for intimate scenes, blurring the line between direction and desire. The film explores themes of artistic ambition, jealousy, and the dangerous intersection of professional authority and personal yearning, culminating in a dreamlike sequence that questions what is real and what exists only in Giorgio's imagination.
