Danube is a historical drama set in Argentina during 1968, at the height of Cold War tensions. The military dictatorship of Juan Carlos Onganía stages the 9th Mar del Plata Film Festival as a propaganda tool, projecting a democratic facade to the international community while simultaneously censoring films and crushing political dissent at home. The festival becomes a battleground between the regime's desire for legitimacy and the resistance of artists and filmmakers who refuse to comply with state control. Danube explores the contradictions of a government attempting to present itself as cultured and progressive while wielding authoritarian power. The film captures a pivotal moment when cinema itself became a weapon in the struggle between artistic freedom and state oppression in Latin America.
