Based on Jawaharlal Nehru's landmark book The Discovery of India, the series unfolds the nation's cultural, political, and social evolution across its vast timeline. Directed, written, and produced by Shyam Benegal with cinematographer V. K. Murthy, the drama was created in 1988 for Doordarshan, India's state broadcaster. Shama Zaidi co-wrote the script alongside Benegal.
