Strangers with Candy is a comedy series following Jerri Blank, a 46-year-old former addict and convict who enrolls as a freshman at Flatpoint High School. After decades spent as a boozer, user, and loser—supporting herself through prostitution, stripping, and petty crime—Jerri attempts a dramatic reinvention. Back home, her comatose father defies expectations with inexplicable feats, her vain stepmother Sara resents her presence, and her bullying stepbrother Derrick makes school unbearable. Jerri's earnest efforts to reform consistently backfire, teaching her all the wrong lessons. Her misadventures inevitably entangle the neurotic history teacher Chuck Noblet and the sensitive art teacher Geoffrey Jellineck, who harbors a secret romance. The show mines dark comedy from Jerri's collision between good intentions and chaotic reality.
