G.B.H. is a seven-part British drama that aired on Channel 4 in summer 1991, written by Alan Bleasdale. The series follows two protagonists: Michael Murray, a Militant-supporting Labour council leader in northern England, and Jim Nelson, headmaster of a school for troubled children. The show sparked controversy because Murray appeared to be based on Derek Hatton, the former Deputy Leader of Liverpool City Council. Bleasdale later revealed an accidental meeting with Hatton before production, during which Hatton acknowledged awareness of the series but expressed no objection. The title's initials typically denote the criminal charge of grievous bodily harm, but Bleasdale intended them to mean Great British Holiday—a darkly ironic contrast to the drama's serious themes.
