Der Strick um den Hals is a period drama set near Paris in 1871. When Count Claudieuse's country estate burns to the ground one night, two shots ring out and the count is left critically wounded. The countess and her children escape the flames with help from Cocoleu, a simple-minded servant. Cocoleu accuses Jacques von Beaucoran, owner of the neighboring estate, of arson and attempted murder. Jacques insists he is innocent. The film unfolds as a tense mystery, with suspicion and accusation threatening to destroy a man's reputation and life. Caught between conflicting testimonies and circumstantial evidence, the truth of what really happened that fateful night remains shrouded in doubt.
