The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts is an NBC television series that ran from 1974 to 1984, featuring host Dean Martin presiding over fifty-four celebrity roast specials. Modeled after the legendary gatherings at New York's Friars' Club, each episode seated a celebrity guest of honor at a banquet table while fellow entertainers took turns delivering affectionate insults and barbs about their careers. The format emerged from Martin's declining variety show, which was retooled in its final season to feature roasts as a cost-effective ratings boost. When The Dean Martin Show was cancelled in 1974, NBC signed Martin to produce roast specials exclusively. Beginning with Bob Hope that year, the specials were taped in California and became a television phenomenon, spawning numerous installments that showcased Hollywood's biggest names trading jokes and jabs in good-natured celebration of their peers.
