The Hanging Gale is a four-episode British-Irish drama serial set in 1846 as Ireland's Great Famine begins. Starring the four McGann brothers—Joe, Paul, Mark, and Stephen—the series follows families caught in the grip of economic collapse and landlord exploitation. The title refers to a brutal practice of the era: landlords granted tenants a six-month grace period on rent, expecting payment after harvest. When crops fail and survival becomes uncertain, this "hanging gale" becomes a noose around the necks of the desperate poor. Created by Joe and Stephen McGann while researching their own family history, the serial captures the human cost of historical catastrophe. Originally broadcast on RTÉ One and BBC1 in 1995, it remains a powerful portrait of resilience and tragedy during one of Ireland's darkest periods.
