Sledge Hammer! is a satirical police sitcom that aired on ABC from 1986 to 1988. The series stars David Rasche as Inspector Sledge Hammer, a trigger-happy detective who embodies every cliché of the maverick cop archetype—taken to absurd extremes. Created by Alan Spencer, the show skewers police procedural tropes with sharp humor and over-the-top action. Sledge's devotion to his .44 Magnum revolver and his reckless disregard for protocol drive the comedy as he stumbles through cases with more firepower than finesse. Al Jean and Mike Reiss, later known for The Simpsons, contributed as writers and story editors. The series ran for two seasons, building a cult following for its fearless parody of action-movie conventions and buddy-cop formulas.
