Captain Video and His Video Rangers is an American science fiction series that premiered on the DuMont Television Network in 1949, marking the first sci-fi show in U.S. television history. Airing weekdays at 7pm ET from June 1949 through April 1955, the series followed the adventures of its titular hero and his team of rangers as they battled cosmic threats and explored futuristic worlds. The show's low-budget sets and earnest performances became cult touchstones of early television. A 30-minute spinoff, The Secret Files of Captain Video, ran Saturday mornings from 1953 to 1954, alternating with Tom Corbett, Space Cadet. Despite its technical limitations and reliance on stock footage, Captain Video established the template for space opera television and proved audiences hungered for science fiction storytelling beyond the big screen.
