The Baxters(1979)

The Baxters is an American sitcom produced by Norman Lear that premiered in syndication in 1979. The series followed a middle-class St. Louis family through a novel format: each 30-minute episode split into two parts. The first half dramatized everyday family conflicts, while the second half became a live studio talk show where the audience debated the issues raised in the vignette. This interactive approach made The Baxters an early experiment in audience participation television. The show lasted two seasons, ending in 1981, with the second season introducing an entirely new cast playing a different Baxter family. Though short-lived, the series pioneered a format that blended scripted drama with unscripted audience engagement.
