Janus is an Australian drama series that aired on ABC Television in 1994 and 1995 across two seasons totalling 26 episodes. A spin-off from the crime series Phoenix, it draws loosely on the true story of Melbourne's Pettingill family and the Walsh Street police shootings. The show follows the relentless prosecution of the notorious Hennessey criminal family from multiple angles: the family itself, police, and the legal system's lawyers, prosecutors, barristers and judges. When the series opens, four Hennessey members—brothers Mal and Steve, brother-in-law Darren Mack, and friend Ken Hardy—are acquitted of shooting two young officers during a botched bank heist, shocking Melbourne. Determined prosecutors, judges and police, many based on real legal figures, pursue the group through the courts. Corruption, legal loopholes, resource constraints and procedural delays complicate their mission to secure convictions, making justice far from certain.
