The Magic Roundabout(1964)

The Magic Roundabout is a French-British children's series created by Serge Danot in 1963, originally airing on French television from 1964 to 1971 in black and white. The BBC initially passed on the show, deeming it charming but difficult to adapt. They later changed their minds, acquiring the stop-motion animation and commissioning Eric Thompson to write and perform entirely new English-language scripts that departed significantly from the original stories. Thompson's version became a phenomenon when it debuted on BBC in 1965, running for 441 five-minute episodes until 1977. The show achieved such cult status that when it moved to an earlier time slot in 1967, adult viewers protested the change to the BBC. The series remains beloved for its whimsical charm and Thompson's distinctive narration.
