Danton is a historical drama set during the French Revolution's bloodiest chapter. Once allies in the revolutionary cause, Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre have become enemies. By 1793, Robespierre commands France and orchestrates the Reign of Terror—mass executions designed to eliminate all opposition. Danton, a celebrated voice for the people, emerges from self-imposed exile in the countryside to challenge Robespierre's tyranny and demand the restoration of citizens' rights. Robespierre views his former friend's return as an intolerable threat. He orders Danton's arrest and execution, along with his supporters. The film chronicles their collision as idealism collides with ruthless consolidation of power, and friendship dissolves into deadly political conflict.
