Harakiri(1962)
What befalls others today, may be your own fate tomorrow.
Harakiri is a 1962 Japanese film about a masterless samurai who arrives at the gates of a powerful clan seeking permission to commit ritual suicide. Tsugumo Hanshirō is unemployed and alone, hoping the House of Iyi will grant him an honorable death and provide a second to perform the final stroke. The clan's senior counselor grows suspicious, questioning whether the ronin truly seeks an honorable end or merely exploits their courtesy for survival. Through interlocking narratives, the film dissects the gap between honor and respect, exposing the brutal reality beneath the samurai code's legendary ideals. A meditation on duty, sacrifice, and institutional hypocrisy, Harakiri remains a searing critique of blind tradition and the human cost of rigid social hierarchies.
