Hard Times(1977)

Hard Times is a four-part British drama miniseries adapting Charles Dickens' 1854 novel, a sharp critique of Victorian society and industrial-age economics. Thomas Gradgrind, a wealthy retired Coketown merchant, has built his life and household around rigid rationalism and self-interest. He raises his eldest children, Louisa and Tom, under this austere philosophy, denying them imagination, emotion, and any escape into fancy. As the family navigates the pressures of their mill town and its grinding social hierarchies, Gradgrind's unforgiving worldview begins to fracture against the messy realities of human desire and suffering. Dickens' biting satire exposes the human cost of prioritising facts and profit over feeling and compassion.
